Cutting Unnecessary Consumption

To save on power consumption promotes environment care. Everyone consumes power in different forms such as fuel for heating, lighting and powering appliances and equipments. By being responsible in choosing to cut on unnecessary consumption, we save more cash and help in keeping our environment sustainable.

During cold winter, residents keep themselves warm by using heating systems that utilize power.

Aside from using power to keep the place warm, there are other ways of keeping the place warm without utilizing power. You can install additional insulations and attaching panels to radiators. If you cannot attach panels, you may consider transferring the radiators to an empty room.

In the past, people burn wood to keep warm. The advantage of burning wood is that they produce less smoke that are safer to the environment and produce more heat than any other kind of heater.

Recently, it was observed that more and more residents are going back to this practice of using wood for heating. In some areas where wood is abundant, they come cheap. The sparkling light that fire gives out provides a romantic setting. The secret in keeping the fire burning and the sparkle all night is a dry log.

The best place you can purchase logs for burning are from stores that have warehouses that keeps its wood dry all year round. Dry logs are easier to burn and when they start burning they burn to the last chip. These logs are sold in different sizes. Make sure you measure the place you plan to keep your logs so that you can store enough logs during the winter.

Instead of just purchasing logs, you can look for substitutes by using log maker on used paper, cards and newspapers. These paper materials are compressed tightly to form something like a log. This way you are recycling the paper into firewood and saving on energy to heat your home.

The recycled substitute is good material for heating when you burn it because it emits more heat with the least smoke. Good for your health and the environment!

Is It Finally Time For Alternative Power Sources?

With the situation in the major oil producing countries being what it is and with our own situation after the big BP oil spill, people are finally getting more serious about alternative power sources. Rather than just large companies trying to find alternative sources, the little person out here in the world is looking for a way to get off the grid. Smaller, start-up companies really have a good chance to show what they think will work. Individuals will want to invest what extra money they might have in finding a safer and more environmentally friendly way to produce power for our homes, our companies and our automobiles.

Solar energy is the most often Googled source of alternative power. Most people don’t know that solar energy also includes wind power, biomass, and hydro power. The energy of the sun can be used to cook, light our homes, heat and cool our homes and other things. This is already being done successfully. Today on television I saw a commercial for a home generator that will power your electrical appliances during a storm. This was not a gas powered generator but one powered by solar power. The large solar panel sits beside the generator and faces the sun. The solar panel soaks up the energy that the sun produces and then feeds it into the generator to run the appliances. This is something very new that is being offered for homes and individuals are likely to take a chance a purchase one. If it works as well as it is supposed to work, larger companies will pour money into investigating and building affordable solar powered energy for homes.

It is important to know that solar energy is a very viable alternative and not some fad. It already has a history. Prior to electricity, people used coal and wood to produce fire and fire to produce light. Also oils were burned to produce light in lamps. People also used gas to produce lights on the street and in the homes. But even before that, people used biomass; wood, dung, and peat; to produce light and heat for their homes. Fossil fuels aren’t the only way people produced energy before the modern age. Holland is well known for the use of wind mills to drain and use their land. The wind mills produced energy for them to use and they were hooked up to some earlier motors to produce energy to run them. Of course, none of this type of energy can be stored but solar power can be.

Today you can purchase a small solar powered battery charger for your cell phone. You can leave the charger in the car window while you are at work and then recharge your cell phone on the way home. Solar heated water has been accessible since the ancient Greeks. The Greeks also managed to trap heat from the sun in their homes and use it for heat. The Greeks were also the first to build greenhouses and trap solar power to grow exotic plants, vegetables and fruit.

Solar power is, indeed, the wave of the future.

Are Solar Panels Right for You?

One of the biggest culprits of the destruction of our environment is the energy consumption. The more power we used, the more harm is done. However, this process can change if we use solar power. We get energy from the sun daily. In fact, exposure to the sun has become an increasing problem because of the heat.

But we can turn the power derived from the sun to useful energy at home by using solar panels. This would mean great savings for you and great news for the environment. You can be guilt-free every time you switch the light on. You can be sure that you will not be harming the environment every time you need to use the electricity.

However, is it for everyone? Are there considerations you need to make? These are few of the questions you need to answer. Bear in mind that these panels are expensive. If you are to invest in them, you have to be sure that you can use them.

Here are some considerations you should make:

1. Before you decide to install the panels, check your property first. It is important that you live in an area where you get enough sun. You should identify an area that gets a lot of sun exposure during the day where you can mount them. Installing a solar panel is not recommended if you live in areas that do not get a lot of sun.

2. How much power does your home needs? You need to know this to identify how many you need to install. Are you going to use solar panels for all your home power needs? Or are you going to use it on certain areas of your home only?

3. Identify your budget. As mentioned earlier, solar panels and its installation do not come cheap. You will need to prepare budget for this. You can contact companies that install solar panels and compare their rates. Once you have chosen the most affordable service, inquire about how much it will cost to have the energy you need.

As mentioned above, it is important that you look for a reliable solar installer. It is great to work with people who are concerned about making a change in the environment as those who are just after making money. Most installers would explain to you information you need to know before installing them.

Once you have installed the panels, it is essential that you learn about their proper maintenance. It is not as complex as you think. First, you need to inspect it regularly. The frequency normally depends on your location. Ask your installer regarding this matter. Clean its surface. You may use water and ordinary dishwasher. It has to have a clean surface to ensure that it functions well.

It is a great investment as it can lower your utility bills. After a while, it will be able to pay for itself. Once you have saved enough, you can install a new batch of panels for your home. But before you make the switch, see to it that you have considered the essential factors first.

Energy Saving Tips For Home Owners

I strongly believe that the cost of home energy will not slide down, in fact there is a tendency to go up. With the worsening economic condition of the world, tightening of our belt is inevitable. We must do something about it. The nice thing about home energy is that we can lower our energy consumption. By implementing some innovation on the manners of how we use electricity at home.

Here are 5 tips on how to save on home energy today:

1) When not in use, unplug your home electronics such as television sets and DVD players. Your television sets and DVD players still consume few watts of power even if it is in standby mode. Make it a habit to unplug your computer and monitor after using it.

2) Replace your fluorescent light bulbs with LED light bulbs or use the brands with energy star label. LED uses lesser watts and has longer life compared to fluorescent light bulbs.

3) Installing a programmable thermostat at home is highly recommended. You can program your home at a comfortable temperature level during winter and summer.

4) Check and make sure that there are no air leaks into or out of your home. Make sure there are no cracks around your walls and ceilings. It is a must that you seal it tight all your windows and doors to prevent air leaks.

5) Check that your attic, exterior and basement walls have sufficient insulation levels. You can refer to the department of energy to find out what is the recommended insulation level in you area.

We go now to the formulation of your house energy efficiency program. The first step is to conduct an assessment of your house to identify which sections of your house are losing energy. The next step is to analyze whether you can fix it or you need a contractor to handle it for you. The next move is to find out how much money you are willing to spend in fixing those areas that have great energy losses. As soon as you identified the areas, prioritize it according to its importance and to the level of energy loss.

If you feel you are not qualified to conduct the energy auditing of your home, you can hire a professional contractor to do it for you. Usually, a professional contractor charges for a small fee in conducting energy audit. Once the professional energy contractor completes his assessment about your home, he will submit to you a list of energy saving recommendations with an effective cost estimate. In this way, you can expect for more comfortable, safer and lesser energy consumption.

Here are the 5 tips on how to save your electric bills. It is a very simple procedure if you know how to do it. You can achieve it by following carefully the guidelines we mentioned above. It is just a matter of implementing an energy efficient home program. If you feel that you do not have the technical know how to handle it by yourself, finding a professional contractor is not a bad idea. What matters most are the benefits it can bring to yourself and to your family.

What Are Fuel Oils And What Are Its Uses?

Fuel oils are a variety of liquid mixtures that are obtained from the distillation of petroleum and their use involves burning them as fuel. The various types include kerosene, diesel fuel, and jet fuel, are produced by different refining processes, are free of sediment, and impurities and are low in viscosity. Kerosene, also called home heating oil, is a combustible hydrocarbon liquid which is refined to a very high quality; therefore, it is clean burning and has a high heat output. There are different types of diesel oils which include white diesel, red diesel, and tractor diesel, all of which have different properties and are manufactured specifically to run in diesel engines. Commercial jet fuel is a high-octane fuel that is made from pure kerosene.

Uses For Fuel Oils

Fuel oils are less volatile than gasoline, and therefore, have a variety of domestic and industrial purposes. Kerosene fuel was, at one time, used in lamps and lanterns as the main source of lighting and cooking. It is still used today as a cooking fuel in some less developed countries and during camping and mountaineering. The most important use is for home heating where it is used in furnaces and boilers to provide heat to buildings. Home heating oil, also referred to as boiler juice, has very good burning characteristics and is recommended for domestic heating appliances. They are also used in electric power and in industrial steam generation. Because of its low flame temperature, kerosene is used in the entertainment industry for fire performances such as fire breathing. Kerosene is also used in insecticide sprays, as a solvent for grease or adhesive, as a lubricant and as a component in other products.

Are Residual Fuels still used?

Residual fuels contains relatively high concentrations of pollutants, such as sulphur and has a low viscosity. To make use, it needs to be heated inside a special heating system which releases sulphur, upon combustion. Nevertheless, due to its undesirable properties its makes it cheap to purchase and is regarded as the cheapest liquid fuel available. Since residual fuel requires heating before use it cannot be used in road vehicles or small ships, as the heating equipment takes up a large area making the vehicle a lot heavier. Also, heating the oil is a fragile process and it’s not possible to do on small, fast moving vehicles. However, more large power plants and large vessels like ships are able to use residual fuel oil.
