The Idiocy of Naive Ideology, Carbon Footprint Penalizations Vs Volcanic Eruptions

It is firmly established in the minds of almost all world leaders that humanity-caused carbon emissions, the result of advanced civilization in vehicular transportation, industry, etc., is the cause of global warming and climate change. Nobel prizes are awarded to leaders (e.g. President Obama) for their “mea culpa” admissions, plus promises of imposing severe emission limitations on autos and factories, plus the paying of enormous penalties by the US as reparations for the damage inflicted upon our planet’s air and water. Grand schemes are initiated by governments, national, state and local, for clean, green renewable energy: for solar and wind developments, for electric automobiles, etc. Despite wintry cold snaps, with news accounts of inordinate and inclement weather, reminder stories will appear in the national news media that the real forcing-function is climate change from humanity-caused pollution. Forgotten are the shameful and sensational revelations of three years ago of “faked” temperature data (the infamous “hockey chart”) which forced the resignations of the “scientific” leaders of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Also being dismissed from memory are the Solyndra bankruptcy and similar fiascos, half a billion dollars wasted in but two years on a company that built solar panels – and with only 1100 workers at stake; or for the failures of ethanol, or electric autos, or wind farm enterprises, etc.

The above represents “educated” man’s view of planet Earth and its climate. However, on May 22, 2011, planet Earth offered a different understanding (if humans would but pay attention): Grimsvotn, a volcano in Iceland erupted, spewing carbon ash into the atmosphere to a height of twelve miles, imposing a no-fly zone for 140 miles surrounding the volcano, and closing four Icelandic airports. More to the point, the eruption – over only four days – cancelled out the claimed civilization-caused carbon-oxide pollution of five years. Similarly, an eruption at another Icelandic volcano in April-May a year earlier, caused one of the greatest disruptions of European air traffic in history, grounding more than 100,000 flights.

One of the few, true weather scientists, undaunted by cold-shoulder obstacles in proclaiming dissident, even challenging views, is an Australian geologist, Dr. Ian Rutherford Plimer, professor at the University of Adelaide. He points out that carbon dioxide, denigrated as an evil byproduct of civilization and human progress, is a truly vital element in our life cycle itself – a chemical compound, needed by every plant for its own sustenance and growth, which is then synthesized into the very oxygen upon which all animal life, including that of humans, depends.

Pointing out the logical futility (and even ignoring the bankrupting consequences of the gross, comparative inefficiencies resulting from eliminating mankind’s “carbon footprint”, he notes that there are over 200 active volcanoes worldwide, spewing carbon into the atmosphere.

Swept under the rug of meaningful information on the subject, is the 1991 eruptions of the Mt. Pinatubo volcano in the Philippines – during which a greater amount of emission gases were absorbed into the atmosphere than the human race has caused during its entire sojourn on earth. So much for the liberal ideology of mankind despoiling our planet (and the closure of US factories, e.g., those producing incandescent 50 cent light bulbs, replaced with 20 times costlier, coiled fluorescent bulbs). Also overlooked is the heretofore acknowledgement of an 800 year global heating and cooling cycle. In fact, temperature data indicates that our planet has gotten 0.7 degrees colder during the past century.

In addition to volcanic eruptions, seasonal brush fires across western America and Australia during an average year will also negate all efforts to reduce carbon for several years.

Not to be swayed by facts however, in California, which apparently leads the world in idealistic, curb-emission politicians, new rules have just been established by regulators – forcing major reductions in cars and trucks by 2025. Adopted by the California Air Resources Board (unanimously – speaking volumes about conventional wisdom), these new “clean car regulations” now require autos and light trucks sold in 2025, to reduce by 75% smog-forming pollutants, and also reduce carbon-dioxide by one-third. Projected is an estimate of 1.4 million vehicles selling in California, which will presumably run on electricity or hydrogen, or be hybrids, using both electricity and gasoline. So say the political regulators.

While auto manufacturers cannot openly oppose the conditions under which they are permitted to sell their cars, they point out they have already invested millions of their own, as well as government subsidies, in no-emission vehicles – however, they, as well as fuel-retailer companies, protest the costs of the fueling equipment necessitated by the electric/hydrogen fueling stations.

The words of the eponymous Puck seem to be wise indeed, but also ignored: “What Fools These Mortals Be!”
