The British government has undertaken some strange actions, that profit nobody and destroy much of the structure of referents that make up historical memory and cultural richness in this ancient country.

In 1974-5, for no compelling reason, a government assault was mounted upon the 1000-year old counties, most of which started in the tenth century as administrative units but have acquired, in the subsequent millennium, a great and inexhaustible richness of character and story, contributing to the tapestry of our national existence.
